Springfield in pre-election freeze – Chicago Sun-Times

5 Jun

Mike Madigan made a little joke in Springfield on the House floor Thursday night as the clock ticked the minutes away to the end of the legislative session. And with it, the prospect of a bipartisan pension overhaul.

Hey, who doesn’t love to laugh?

The joke was that if there had to be a special session of the General Assembly this summer because of the abject failure of lawmakers to resuscitate the pension corpse that is Illinois, “Be careful what you wish for,” deadpanned the speaker of the House.

That’s because, you zany legislators, the only way you can collect your per diem for extra days worked during the summer is if the governor, not the leadership, calls for the session.

Imagine paying these people even MORE money to not get us where we need to go?

So what happens now? The same thing that happened when Rockin’ Rod Blagojevich was our governor. And Madigan and the other leaders were, well, our leaders.
