Bob Shelstrom, of Palos Park, announced he will run against Kelly Burke (D-Evergreen Park) for state representative in the 36th District in the Nov. 6 general election.

Shelstrom, who considers himself a taxpayer, student and family advocate, will be listed on the ballot as the Republican candidate. Shelstrom decided to run when he discovered no Republican ran for the seat in the March primary, he said in a news release posted on his Facebook page. The release said he was nominated by Republican Township Committeemen Sean Morrison (Palos Township) and Shawn Murphy (Worth Township).

Towns or portions of towns in the 36th District include Palos Park, Palos Hills, Worth, Chicago Ridge, Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park and Chicago.

Shelstrom, who occasionally writes guest columns for the SouthtownStar, is a civil and mechanical engineer, a former college and high school science instructor, and a married father of three high school and college-aged children, according to the release. He is a graduate of Stagg High School in Palos Hills and has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, the release said.
