Senator Dick Durbin on Bush tax cuts vote

2 Aug

Yesterday, thanks to pressure from more than 23,000 DickDurbin.com petition signers and thousands of other concerned Americans, Speaker John Boehner relented:

Speaker Boehner brought President Obama’s tax cut bill, passed last week by the Senate, up for a vote on the House floor.

Unfortunately, House Republicans defeated the Senate’s common-sense measure that would have rolled back the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires while preserving and extending President Obama’s tax cuts for middle-class families.

Instead, Boehner’s GOP caucus passed yet another irresponsible tax bill that continues to hand out tax breaks to the wealthiest 2% of Americans who need them the least — a reckless giveaway that we simply can’t afford.

Clearly, the only way we can make the House work for middle-class families again is to regain our Democratic majority — and electing six more Democrats to Congress here in Illinois could well give us the edge we need.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Dick Durbin
U.S. Senator
