In the Dec. 23 editorial, “The difficult math of pension restructuring,” The State Journal-Register suggested those calling for a revenue solution to the Illinois pension problem must have forgotten that much of the income tax increase enacted last year has been used to pay what the state owes to the pension systems.

Actually, we remember the 2011 income tax hike well. We also recall when lawmakers, faced with inadequate revenues to fund education, health services for children and senior citizens and other programs Illinoisans expect to be funded, decided that they would simply borrow money from the state pension systems rather than raise taxes.
