APNewsBreak: Pension health savings $26B in review

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – A league of unions says an Illinois Senate pension reform plan would reduce state debt by more than a rival House proposal if health insurance costs are counted.

The We Are One Illinois coalition says the Senate’s proposal would cut in half – by $26 billion – Illinois’ unfunded liability for government-retiree health insurance. The union analysis adds a wrinkle to the pension reform plans debate a day before lawmakers adjourn.

The Associated Press obtained the study results before their general release Thursday.

If combined with a $6 billion reduction in the $97 billion pension debt, the coalition says the plan would save more than a House-approved proposal.

The review was conducted by the health policy director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Washington, D.C.
