Rauner Refuses to Particpate – Bob Heisse: Meet 21 of the 22 state and local candidates in issue-driven editorial board videos – Opinion – The State Journal-Register – Springfield, IL

Two months ago we started reaching out to candidates for public office and their campaigns to set up editorial board endorsement meetings.

As is our practice, videos of these meetings would be posted online for all readers to view, and our board’s endorsements would run close to the election and spark conversation.

Our goal this time around was to interview every state and local candidate in a contested race for the March 18 primary, and endorse in every race on both sides of the ballot.

We wound up these interviews last week, having met with 21 of the 22 state and local candidates in seven races. The videos are all posted at bit.ly/SJRprimary.

Missing is Bruce Rauner, who is in a four-way race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

His campaign has yet to find time for this. They couldn’t even find time on Feb. 18 when Rauner joined Bill Brady, Kirk Dillard and Dan Rutherford in the debate at the Hoogland Center for the Arts.

Observers noticed Rauner and his team leaving immediately after that event, clearly not wanting to spend any extra moments answering questions in Springfield.

Of course, Rauner has been known to say that he’ll live in Springfield if elected. But during this entire campaign he’s been unable to break away to visit the capital city newspaper for an hour and speak to our readers through the editorial board meeting video.

It’s unfortunate, but I guess Rauner wants you to hear his well-funded broadcast sound bites rather than hear him address the issues posed in questions asked of the other GOP candidates. More…
